Seismic Design of a Multistorey Reinforced concrete BuildingThis project was carried out under the supervision of Dr. C.V.R. Murty, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. The project was a part of the requirements for a bachelor's degree. In the project a model design of a multistory reinforced building to demonstrate the philosophy and procedure of Earthquake resistant design was produced. It also involved development of a software tool in ANSI C to design the structural members to conform latest design code of ductile detailing.
Abstract The four storey building is spatially planned for a total of sixteen flats, four at each floor. The structural configuration chosen is simple, regular and reasonably symmetric. The presence of the brick masonry infills is not considered in the design process. For the analysis of the structure, the Structural Analysis Program 80 (SAP80) is used. Specific purpose programs of limit state for design of beams and columns as per the seismic ductile detailing code IS:13920-1993 are developed to automate the design of large number of members. The design is performed for three grades of concrete, and the variation in the quantities of steel and concrete is reported. This project was nominated for best project.
